CCI Mlab
The Machine Learning lab (MLab) is a safe and collaborative research workspace that emphasizes learning by doing. The MLab is heavily influenced by the experiential teaching philosophies of John Dewey, and William James. The MLab, then, allows each MLab student to define their own goals that allow each to leverage their unique talents and learning styles in their research.
The MLab started in 2019. During the first two years, MLab research focused on artificial intelligence (AI) computer vision classification problems. For example, our work has included training an AI agent to recognize different animals or objects in the environment. The MLab began work with YOLO3 (You Only Look Once), the first project developed was Turtle Finder, an AI that might be used to spot, count, or identify different species of Turtles. As the membership of the lab has grown, so has the breadth of our

Are you new to machine learning and unsure of where to start? Or do you have a background knowledge already and want to learn more about research with our resources and support? Are you interested in learning how to customize and AI agent?
The MLab admits as many students as possible, but we are short-staffed. Currently, we maintain a staff of 14 students, working on 3 conference publication research projects and a couple of ‘fun’ applications. MLab applicants are expected to have some ability or strong desire to learn how to use Python, Jupyter Notebooks, and Cloud Services.

The MLab was started by Jonathan Adams Ed.D. but the MLab could not have been successful without a brilliant engineer, and co-founder, John Sutor and all the contributions made by the MLab researchers. The MLab has grown because of the support, and hard-work of students from the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program at Florida State.
The MLab students have presented at Florida Undergraduate Research Conference, Harvard Undergraduate Research Conference, published conference publications, have been awarded Florida State University IDEA (Innovative Designs for Enhancing the Arts) grants, and the MLab has been a recipient of a Collaborative Collision grant from the Office of Research.
